The Most Common Myths About

Back pain

You've Been Told By Doctors, Friends and Social Media That Keep You In Pain And Taking Pills

If you’ve suffered with back pain or sciatica, you’ve probably heard a wide range of stories and opinions from friends and family, and even outdated advice from doctors to rest and rely on painkillers which has left you confused, frustrated and unable to get long-term relief.

Here are some of the most common back pain myths people who visit our Long Island clinic have been told which has actually made their back pain and sciatica much worse, and delayed their recovery from injuries.

MYTH #1 - STOP WHEN YOU ARE IN PAIN
There are a lot of false myths that David has heard directly from patients. One that stands out to David is that if your injury hurts, then you simply stop your sporting endeavours or daily activities, and rest. That is not true as staying active and doing proper exercises are fundamental to a faster recovery.
MYTH #2 - IT IS JUST A PART OF GETTING OLD
Another myth David has come across is that having pain is like getting wrinkles, that it is just a part of the process of getting old. According to David, that’s not accurate and he has seen many people who are part of the older generation doing exceptionally well in their life. He has experience of treating patients who are in their 50s, 60s and 70s, who are still skiing and playing pickleball in their free time. David has encountered a 75-year-old rock climber in his community, an amazing achievement to be climbing at that age.
